Georgia Power has started construction on four battery energy storage systems across the state. The projects will add 765 megawatts of generating capacity, enough to power approximately 573,750 homes. Two facilities will be built near Air Force bases, one at a retired coal plant, and another will expand an existing facility.
Georgia Power is also committed to supporting customer-sited generation resources to meet the state's growing energy needs. The 2025 IRP includes two customer expansions of BESS programs including enhancements to the Customer Connected Solar Program and launching a new Customer-Sited Solar Plus Storage Pilot.
Accordingly, Georgia Power is planning for more generation, with ongoing investment into existing power plants, including nuclear, and integration of more natural gas, while adding 4 GW of renewable resources, boosting the proposed portfolio to around 11 GW by 2035. That indicates new additions of 1.1 GW in renewables.
Georgia Power is also collaborating with the Georgia PSC to procure an additional 1GW of BESS capacity through competitive bidding and is developing a 13MW demonstration project at Fort Stewart army installation near Savannah, Georgia.
