However, the annual growth rate slowed down to 15% in 2024, after three consecutive years of doubling newly added capacity.
As renewable energy continues to expand in Europe, energy storage must keep pace to ensure the grid remains flexible and stable. The Energy Storage Coalition urges the European Commission to develop an Action Plan on Energy Storage, providing much-needed regulatory clarity and supporting Member States in scaling up energy storage capacity.

So what does it reveal? 2024 was a record year for new energy storage deployments in Europe, with 12GW/21.9GWh increases in the total capacity. These were comprised of 4.9GW/12.1GWh increases in front-of-the-meter capacity and 7.1GW/9.8GWh increases in behind-the-meter capacity.
In March 2025, the Commission launched the European Energy Storage Inventory, a real-time dashboard that displays energy storage levels across different European countries. It is the first European-level tool of its kind and offers energy storage data across a full range of technologies.
