Hence, design engineers are looking for new materials for efficient ESS, and materials scientists have been studying advanced energy materials, employing transition metals and carbonaceous 2D materials, that may be used to develop ESS.
Batteries (in particular, lithium-ion batteries), supercapacitors, and battery–supercapacitor hybrid devices are promising electrochemical energy storage devices. This review highlights recent progress in the development of lithium-ion batteries, supercapacitors, and battery–supercapacitor hybrid devices.
Smart energy storage devices, which can deliver extra functions under external stimuli beyond energy storage, enable a wide range of applications. In particular, electrochromic (130), photoresponsive (131), self-healing (132), thermally responsive supercapacitors and batteries have been demonstrated.
