Norwegian startup Heimdall Power is working with Minnesota’s Great River Energy to squeeze more electricity out of the utility’s power lines with AI-enabled temperature and weather monitoring. Click to save this article. You'll be asked to sign into your Forbes account.
Besides that, Heimdall Power's sensors offer a lot of other functionalities, such as icing detection, line faultiness, fire detection, and more: “We provide you with sensors of grid awareness to get more capacity, safety, and health out of your existing grid.”
What makes Heimdall’s technology attractive to utilities is the ability to transmit more power without building new powerlines. This “will help us unlock grid congestion and achieve additional transmission capacity from our existing infrastructure,” Priti Patel, Great River’s vice president of transmission, said in a statement.
Recently, a utility, Great River Energy witnessed the success of its pilot in the US where the deployment of first four Heimdall Power Neurons resulted in a 42.8 per cent average increase in transmission capacity on a key line in the company’s transmission system.
As a result of the successful pilot, the company planned to install 52 of Heimdall Power’s Neurons throughout its electrical grid in the US. While the grid expansion is an unavoidable task, the grid enhancement methods or technologies like the magic balls represent a quick fix and are much cheaper.
