Uruguay’s green hydrogen strategy could be a game-changer in this area: it offers storage solutions, further integrates renewables into the energy matrix, and positions Uruguay as a renewable energy exporter (not only solar and wind, but also biogenic CO2 availability would enable it to export PtX products as well).
To address this, Uruguay has launched a Second Energy Transition aimed at reducing dependence on imported fossil fuels and related GHG emissions, particularly through initiatives to increase energy efficiency, electrify end uses, and further integrate renewables into hard-to-abate sectors.
Uruguay has already developed its roadmap and is preparing all necessary infrastructures and capacities to encourage this transition. This roadmap aims to produce 1Mton/year of green hydrogen by 2040, installing approximately 18GW of renewable energy capacity and 9 GW of electrolyzers.
