By adding graphite blocks to increase storage duration, we provide a modular, scalable solution that can meet today''s short-duration (5-hour) needs and the long-duration energy storage (500 hour) needs of tomorrow.
Fourth Power makes renewable energy an on-demand energy source through utility-scale, thermal battery technology. With the ability to provide flexible-duration energy storage, we can start small and grow with the grid to save consumers money and ensure a clean energy future.
Utility-scale energy storage company Fourth Power has secured $19 million in Series A funding, which will be used to scale up its short- and long-duration thermal energy storage technology, the company announced Tuesday.
For power generation alone, Fourth Power’s roundtrip efficiency target is 50%. “Our TPV cells have already set a world record at 41% – and we have designs to reach 50%,” Henry said. “For co-generation, the efficiency is near 100%.”
Fourth Power is looking to solve a couple of problems facing the energy sector, CEO Arvin Ganesan told Utility Dive — the significant amount of cost-effective energy storage that will be needed on the grid over the next 15 years, and the fact that all of those storage resources can’t draw from the same supply chain of rare earth materials.
Furthermore, Fourth Power’s flexible, modular design means our utility customers can add additional storage to a battery over time at a fraction of the original install cost, making our battery uniquely suited to scale alongside renewable penetration. Our mission is to make renewables as reliable and dispatchable as fossil — and at lower cost.
Each subsystem of Fourth Power’s thermal battery is separately housed – this allows energy and power to be scaled independently. Grid-scale, long-duration batteries must have flexible discharge rates and reaction times to give grid operators complete control over how and when the stored energy is used.
